Rare Antique Military Civil War Carte de Visite Photo of Civil War Brigadier Gen. Abram Duryee, Colonel & Later Brigadier General of the Famous 5th New York (DURYEE'S ZOUVES), With Period Identification on Reverse. WOUNDED 5 TIMES, INCLUDING AT THE BATTLE OF ANTIETAM. DESCRIPTION: Particularly nice, original rare BOLD antique CIVIL WAR Carte de Visite of Brigadier General Abram Duryee, as shown.

He was the Colonel, later Brigadier General of the famed 5th New York Infantry, also known as Duryee's Zouves. ONE OF THE VERY COLORFUL REGIMENTS WHO WORE EXOTIC ZOUVE UNIFORMS. This regiment was heavily involved during the Battle of Antietam. Duryee himself was wounded 5 times during the war, including at this battle. Carte de Visite photos were popular during the Civil War, both by officers and military men, and also by civilians. Carte de Visites were the most popular format during the war years, and including military and political leaders in your CdV album was very popular. They were celebrities and this was the best way to collect them, without having the various other methods we have today. So this is an especially great addition to an album, and one not often seen. HIS C d V IS RARE AND AN AUTOGRAPHED CdV IS ALMOST UNHEARD OF!!! AND A GREAT, BOLD, CLEAR ONE TO BOOT!!

THIS ONE IS A PARTICULARLY NICE EXAMPLE AS HE IS IDENTIFIED ON THE REVERSE IN PERIOD PENCIL HANDWRITING. This one was no doubt in an original Civil War period CdV album. Very clear, in excellent condition.
