WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT AS A MILITARY NATIONAL PARK IN 1890 (37 YEARS EARLIER) SOUVENIR HUNTERS TOOK THEIR TOLL ON THE LANDMARKS INTEGRITY CREATING A NEED FOR A WIRE FENCE AROUND THE HOUSE IN ADDITION TO THE BARS IN THE DOORWAY TO RESIST ANY MORE DEGRADATION OF WHAT WAS LEFT OF THE HISTORIC STRUCTURE. It is here that Confederate soldiers broke through the Union line thanks to a gap created when Union commander General Rosecrans mistakenly ordered troops to vacate the area in order to fill a fictional gap he thought existed farther north. This order created a real gap, and when the Confederates broke through, the Union's chances of victory were dashed.
