Very rare issue from the Southwest Confederacy. Newspapers from Texas are very uncommon, particularly from before or during the Civil War period. Here is an issue from the midst of the war, one of the earliest war-dated issues we have offered in recent years. The front page has over 2 columns taken up with a terrific speech given by Jefferson Davis headed: "The President's Speech at Augusta" and addressed to the. Ladies and gentlemen, friends and fellow-citizens of Georgia... The speech was intended to boost the sagging spirits of the Georgians, as Atlanta had fallen in early September & Savannah would fall before Christmas. Following Davis's speech there is: "General Beauregard's Speech" which is brief and mostly paraphrased here. Was ready to go wherever the President should see fit to order him & to fight the enemy on every single foot of ground... He would say he would sooner lay down his life, see his family perish, and his property lost forever, than live to see his country under Yankee rule.

The balance of the front page is taken up with various Civil War news including 2 letters signed: H. Lee, and one by: U.

Page 2 has an interesting editorial, and also: "Letter From Camden". The back page has some nice content as well, one article extolling the virtues of Stonewall Jackson and Bedford Forrest. Four pages, binding holes in the blank left margin, a few very small & discrete archival mends at margins, generally very nice. A very rare issue from this date.
