Used to hold carte de visite size photos, the most popular photo medium of the day. THIS ONE HAS MOST OF ITS ORIGINAL PHOTOS, WHICH IS NICE.
IT COULD ALSO BE A PERFECT WAY TO HOLD YOUR OWN ORIGINAL COLLECTION OF PERIOD CdVs!! It is the large size album, containing.
24 pages, with room for 2 standard size carte de visite photos per page, for a total capacity of 48 full size CdV's. The album is particularly fancy with gold trim, and has a PARTICULARLY.
NICE BROWN LEATHER EMBOSSED PATTERN ON THE FRONT & BACK, gold trimmed pages, and a matched pair of perfectly working original brass hinges (One or more of these hinges is often missing, but BOTH OF THEM ON THIS ALBUM ARE PERFECT). The album is in excellent condition overall, including binding and covers and pages.
This one is very rare in that it is IDENTIFIED, HAVING THE OWNER'S NAME ON THE FRONT, IN GOLD, AS SHOWN. Complete with maker's page (Roberts Brothers, Boston) and index page. Large album, measuring 5" x 6 1/4" x 2 thick. Has 31 of the original CdeV's remaining, about 70%, which is surprising after so many years.Has some children, some females, and some men. All Civil War period Carte de Visites, with a couple of tintypes. Several of the men are wearing or holding hats, which is always a plus.
Two on opposite pages must be brothers, as shown, since they are so similar. In fact, they look so similar, including the same studio, that except for a moustache you would think they are the SAME person. I haven't taken any out, but from what I can see, most of the backmarks are from Boston and New York City, with a couple from Cambridgeport, Charlestown, and Philadelphia, etc. This is one of the nicest Civil War period albums I have seen, and some nice, unusual photos.
