Rare Identified Union Civil War Drum w/Worsted Strap & Drumsticks & Photograph! Rare Antique Union Civil War Drum w/Shoulder Strap & Drumsticks & Photograph of Soldier with Drum! Similar identified drums are in Institutional Collections, Museums and Private Collections. The Royer Family were the founders of Royersford, a small town located outside Philadelphia. The family then moved to Ephrata located in Lancaster County. This original Civil War Drum was carried by Orestes H. Porter who was enlisted in Company 1 of the 21st Maine Voluntary Infantry. The 21st Maine Infantry was a nine month regiment enlisted in November of 1862 and active in the Port Hudson and Plains Shore Campaign, LA in 1863 The regiment suffered casualties of 172, mainly due to illness. The drum does show wear to the paint and other areas consistent with it's age and usage. Both the goatskin heads are intact as well as the snare mechanism which can be seen in the photos. The rare red, tan & blue shoulder is in used condition and the leather strap which would attach to the drum is not functional.

One of the most exciting features of this drum is the B & W photograph taken of the family. On the steps of the home on the right hand side can be seen the two Union soldiers with their drums. Orestes is the soldier on the right with the larger drum.

We were told this letter was written by a direct descendant of Orestes Porter. Do not hesitate to ask questions as we will do our best to answer them. Drum measures 16.75" tall and 17" in diameter.
