Particularly Nice EARLY Civil War Naval Cutlass Sword, MARKED AMES, 1861, USN. Nice, original FULL LENGTH, COMPLETE Civil War Naval cutlass. A VERY SCARCE MODEL TO FIND IN THIS CONDITION. I have included a variety of photos for you.NICELY SHOWN TO HAVE THE DESIRIBLE AMES/CHICOPEE/MASS. MANUFACTURE STAMP on the throat of the blade. On the other side of the blade is U. ", inspector's marks, and date, appears to be "1861. Nice to find a complete early sword like this in fairly decent shape.
Blade is in very good condition, bright, and with only a few rust spots that could be cleaned. May have been a bit of old pitting that has been cleaned..
Hilt/basket is really nice and in excellent condition. Has original ribbed wooden grip. From a sword this early, IT HAS A GREAT LOOK. REALLY NICE AGED BRASS PATINA TO THE HILT AND KNUCKLE GUARD AND RIVETS AND MAKES A GREAT DECORATOR.
Also nice with its markings. Has the rack location stamped in the brass at the base of the handle. Also as indicated, particularly NICE WITH THE AMES MARKINGS and the USN MARKINGS AND DATE. FULL LENGTH BLADE, MEASURING about 25 3/4 long. Entire cutlass measures about 31 1/2 overall.
Would make a great addition to ANY SWORD OR CIVIL WAR OR EARLY NAVY COLLECTION OR DISPLAY. IT WOULD ALSO MAKE A GREAT DECORATOR ON A WALL, OVER A FIREPLACE, ETC. In a living room, family room, Man Cave, or office, etc. Even for a non-sword or non-Civil War collector, it still MAKES A GREAT EARLY ANTIQUE MILITARY DECORATOR FOR ANYONE!!
