As such their reporting on war events provide a contrasting perspective beyond most other Northern newspapers. Not surprisingly, the report of the Lee's surrender to General Grant at Appomattox is relegated to page five: "Surrender of General Lee" "Terms Of The Capitulation" "Movements of Sherman Unknown" Mr.Lincoln on Reconstruction which includes the many correspondences b between Grant and Lee on the closing terms of the surrender.
