I'm helping a friend sell a family heirloom. It is a saber style sword that belonged to her great-great-great-great-grandfather, who was a member of the Iowa Volunteers (specifically, Company L of the 38th Regiment of the Howard County Volunteers, aka Iowa Volunteers, according to the mustering document), and fought in the Civil War. I'm not an expert on swords or the Civil War, but will describe the sword, scabbard and documents as best I can. Please feel free ask any questions you may have.
My friend's great-great-great-great-grandfather was William H. Patterson of the Iowa Volunteers. For sale here is his sword, with its original scabbard intact, and the accompanying certificate of promotion (in addition to full-color digital photo files of all documents). A framed/matted mustering document not sure if that's the correct term?
, which shows his rank as a 2nd Lieutenant under Captain James H. Peirce - this document shows its age, with severe browning, particularly along the right edge, it's pretty fragile/brittle.A framed/matted certificate of promotion from 2. Lieutenant on August 20th, 1863 - signed by then Governor of Iowa, Samuel J. Kirkwood, as well as Iowas Secretary of State (James Wright) & Adjutant General Nathaniel B.
Baker, signing as N B Baker - this document shows fold/crease marks, apparently having originally been folded up like a map for some time before being framed - it has been framed at least twice, you can see in the picture that it has a different fade pattern when it was displayed in a smaller frame at first - an early/contemporaneous family member appears to have written notes at the time regarding the circumstances at an angle across the face of the document. 2 oval photographic portraits, one of the young William H. Patterson & the other of his young bride, Katherine. We will include full-color digital photo file s of all 4 documents (so you may print them up as you wish), as well as the actual, original certificate of promotion; the owner wishes to retain the original oval portraits and the original mustering document. The sword itself is in very good shape, with an almost-sharp edge; normal wear/patina for its age, same for the scabbard.Features of the sword are. Manufactured by the AMES MFg.
