US Civil War Model 1859 USMC Sword W. H. Horstmann Engraved Sword
Offered is a very nice & hard to find Marine sword from the Civil War period. From 1859 to 1875 Marine officer's had to give up the famed Mameluke sword to conform to Army supply restrictions & settled on the 1850 model you see here. This example has the Civil War period "King's Head" stamp on the ricasso, "IRON PROOF" acid etched on the blade spine & U.

On one side of the blade. The King's Head stamp was for a Weyersberg blade which Horstmann and Son used for their higher grade sword blades. A Knight's Head (helmeted head) is for the Kirschbaum & Co.

The etching is a little faded, but you can still see the stand of arms, United States flag, USMC, and E. The USMC etching is very faded. Original leather grips with thin wire wrap.

The blade measures 35.75 inches overall with the blade itself measuring 30 inches. The brass guard is stamped No. There is a very small amount of gilding left inside the etching.
