For sale here is a wonderful Civil War Guitar Cover/Pouch with a letter of provenance. The pouch measures roughly 37.5" long by 12" wide. There is scattered mothing and soiling as shown.
The pouch closes on the wide end with 6 buttons that are all present, but one is chipped. It appears that these buttons are made of some sort of dark brown finished bone? The pouch is made of blue wool fur felt. The stitching is good with some period repairs and some weak seams.
Inside the pouch there is a stitched on pouch. Inside the pouch was a letter that read as follows.. Young 18th Regiment Consolidated With Company H Yellow Jacket Battalion Louisiana Infantry. Robert Young Leed's Guard Regiment Louisiana Militia.I think it is a really nice piece. John Offley of Williamsburg, Virginia.
As mentioned, it was carried by a young Confederate cavalry trooper from Louisiana by the name of Robert Young. Young was a distant cousin to Mr. Offley and the guitar passed down through the family. The Offley family is very historically involved in Virginia and i have absolutely no doubt as to this or the guitar's authenticity. I hope you enjoy this.
I think you got a very good deal. Obviously, the letter was written to one of these gentlemen. This is an amazing piece that will be an amazing addition to any collection.
