This is an extremely nice U. Civil War Staff and Field Officer's Sword, Model 1850 which was manufactured by the famous Swordmaker "AMES". It is mounted with a gorgeous bright and frost etched blade that measures 32 1/8 inches in length which has survived in superb original condition, still wearing all of its lovely etching on either side which includes "US" as well as the maker's marking just next to the ricasso. Although near perfect, the blade has a tiny bend to the very extreme tip which could be remedied in the right hands. The exquisitely detailed brass guard wears equally beautiful open cut pierced work that also includes a "US" and remains very nice in its condition as well still wearing much of its original bright gold wash.
The sharkskin hilt is also very healthy and continues to wear its original twisted wire wrap securely in place. The outstanding blued metal scabbard is very nicely brass fitted with the top fitting marked AMES MFG. CHICOPEE, MASS and with much of the gold wash still present on all the fittings. There are some small dings on the base fitting, otherwise the scabbard has survived in very beautiful condition as well. Overall measuring 40 1/8 inches in length.
