Zischagge helmet used all-over Europe and during the English civil wars during cromwells time. Original black color and some surface rust, two missing rivets and Nasal Guard. Excellent condition with a few losses: No Nasal Guard or Ear guards. Size: 16" L x 9" H x 8 W. Known as the Zischagge or commonly as a "Lobster tail" helmet, this pattern dates back to the 17th century.
It was based on the helmet of a Roman Legion helmet from the 3rd century, but with distinct Islamic elements. It features a movable nose guard that were identical to Ottoman helmets of the 16th century, and the first Zischagge helmets appeared in Eastern Europe, including Poland in the late 16th century. This helmet style moved westward, and by the middle of the 17th century these helmets were being widely mass produced in Northern Germany and Holland. It is widely held that the first helmets were produced in Holland, and imported to England, while later helmets may have been produced domestically. 9"H X 16"W X 8d.
